Citizens Call on Oil and Gas Industry and Politicians to Safeguard WV Waters
Come out Monday evening! Oil and gas industry lobbyists are among those leading the efforts to pass H.B. 2574/S.B. 423, “Amending the Aboveground Storage Tank Act.” This bill would gut last year’s unanimously-passed SB 373, the Above Ground Storage Tank Act, drafted in the wake of the MCHM chemical spill that contaminated the drinking water of about a sixth of the state’s population. Latest Supreme Court Ruling: Constitutional Amendment Could Fix this Mess
Another disappointing ruling came down from the the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice Roberts lastweek, in which Big Money scored a major victory against average citizens. In McCutcheon v. FEC, the court struck down contribution limits for what one individual can contribute to political campaigns and party committees during an election cycle. More

Remembering Elinore Taylor
I can’t remember a time when Elinore Taylor wasn’t associated with OVEC. If you go to our website and type in her name, you will find page after page of results. Elinore was everywhere present in OVEC’s activities and organizational development. Hers was a welcoming smile at board meetings, protests, and public hearings including events that she initiated. Behind that warm smile was not only a friendly, caring woman, but also a dedicated, determined defender of “the least of these, my brethren.” More

Corporate Attacks Show Need for Economic Transition
From Southern West Virginia to Detroit, there is a corporate attack happening on working people’s pensions and benefits. While we hold out hope for a good settlement between the UMWA and Patriot Coal, there was no reason for this situation. Promises were made in exchange for hard work from these miners, and these promises should be […] More

Victory: Supreme Court Pilot Program Now Permanent! In 2012, Allen Loughry became the first and only candidate for state Supreme Court to take advantage of public financing of his campaign, using a pilot program established thanks to our WV Citizens for Clean Elections coalition. Remarkably, Loughry won the election, defeating the politically powerful Tish Chafin. More

Beauty and the Coal Beast
A March 8 post in “Grounded,” The State Journal’s energy blog, vice president of the West Virginia Coal Association, and notorious funny man, Chris Hamilton was quoted saying that some West Virginia delegates might not know “the difference between a dragline and a drag queen.” He made these remarks at a recent coal industry conference […] More

Reality TV Show? How About a Taste of This
The New York Times reported that Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said, “Economic growth is what is going to make mountaintop removal palatable.” Since becoming a West Virginia public figure Manchin has been the state’s mouthpiece for the coal industry, shouting from the flattened mountaintops the praises of the industry. When a lie is big, one […] More

Sign the Clean Elections Petition
We need clean elections and fair courts now. Victory for Clean Elections
Clean elections scored a big victory on November 6, when Alan Loughry won a seat on the West Virginia State Supreme Court. This surprised many, as he was the only candidate to use public funding and he beat out Tish Chaffin, who used her wealth to donate almost a million dollars to her own campaign. […] More

Rescue Warranted for the WV Supreme Court Public Campaign Pilot
More and more these days, I’m beginning to believe that I live in “upside-down” world, the Bo-Zone Layer (thank you Far Side cartoons) or some other convoluted universe.
