We have been monitoring the construction going on with the SM-80 replacement segments in both Cabell and Wayne counties. Reminder: this very old Columbia pipeline is being “renovated” in our backyards, because of Columbia’s larger (36-inch diameter) proposed pipeline—the Mountaineer Xpress—which will connect to it at a compressor station in the Milton area. It would be wonderful if our churches and faith communities could become advocates for disaster preparedness and disaster prevention, not to mention sustainable climate action. Many faith leaders sadly see this type of discussion and activity as “too political.” WWJD? More

FERC’s “Less-Than-Significant” = “Very Significant” to the Rest of Us
Less-than-significant impact? You be the judge. Each of these pipelines will require compressor stations to either be built or expanded. Compressor stations can be nuisances in the communities where they are located because of the intense and constant noise and air pollutants emitted on a regular basis. They can also be a public safety hazard in that emissions of odorless and colorless, but toxic and highly explosive gas can occur. More
