FERC Hear This: Pipeline Risks to Rural Folks Too High
My home is approximately one mile from the Supply Header Pipeline. The proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline runs parallel to the Supply Header Project in our area. Why would we allow two pipelines so close to one another? At a meeting in Doddridge County, Dominion told us that the pipeline's blast zone radius will be 942 feet — everything 942 feet around any point of explosion along the pipeline will basically be gone/toast. Because of fracking-related activities, there already have been well fires, explosion, spills, leaks, well-water contamination and wrecks. Our roads have been destroyed by heavy truck traffic and full of drilling traffic — you take your life in your hands every time you get in your car. We are at risk now 24 hours a day every day of the year for this industry. Now, once again we are being asked to take on more of their risk. More

Citizens Call on Oil and Gas Industry and Politicians to Safeguard WV Waters
Come out Monday evening! Oil and gas industry lobbyists are among those leading the efforts to pass H.B. 2574/S.B. 423, “Amending the Aboveground Storage Tank Act.” This bill would gut last year’s unanimously-passed SB 373, the Above Ground Storage Tank Act, drafted in the wake of the MCHM chemical spill that contaminated the drinking water of about a sixth of the state’s population. Defend Our Water: Save SB 373!
It took intense citizen pressure to pass SB 373, and we need to build that pressure again to preserve the improvements to water regulation gained in that bill. Act fast because this bill (HB 2574) seems fast tracked, with only one committee reference (House Judiciary). More

Hog Slurry Lagoons New “Future” for Old MTR Sites? Hog Wash!
Helmick says another thing that government officials have avoided saying out loud: MTR mining activity makes places remote. From our experience, that's because people have been driven away by the approaching mining. Helmick likely overstated himself and knows that there are some people and communities still near some MTR sites, but the folks living near MTR sites are far more likely to be unhealthy and facing early death than people who don't live near MTR sites. Cathy Kunkel on Water Crisis Anniversary
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the water crisis it is that public pressure can help protect our water. Keep up the pressure: Come out in January! More

Take a pebble. Drop it in water. Watch the ripples on the water.
On January 21, in the midst of a statewide snowstorm, around 200 people gathered for an event: Honor the Waters Candlelight Vigil. Outside the West Virginia State Capitol, alongside the Kanawha River, in sub-freezing temperatures and a beautiful snowfall, people stood together to honor and defend our water during a time of crisis. People across the nation and around the globe held solidarity vigils. More

OVEC ED Statement on Leak / Water Emergency
The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition (OVEC) extends its concern to people and communities impacted by yesterday’s release of 4-methylcyclohexane methanol. More than a day and a half after people first noticed the odor that alerted officials to the leak, the smell still lingers near downtown Charleston, though, due to health-department-ordered shutdown of restaurants, there are few people downtown.
