Step Up: Fight Fracking Pipelines
Fracking pipelines! The tentacles of the gas industry reach across America and the globe, so we must all stand together and work together from different areas affected by the gas industry, and show solidarity to stop this harmful industry and work towards a real renewable future that is more beneficial to us all. We all live downstream. More

Pipe Up, Come Out
Keep Your Foot Down: Contact the Governor. Thanks to everybody (around 200 of you!) who came out for The People's Foot: No More MTR Permits, held on March 16 at DEP headquarters in Charleston. Most of you probably read the news the next day: State announces review of studies linking mountaintop removal mining to illness More

FERC Hear This on Atlantic Coast Pipeline
Many have suggested we accept gas development and the proposed pipeline because of the jobs it brings. I raised two children here, and yes, I would love it if they could stay and make a decent living here. But not if they must risk their health working with hazardous materials. Not if their work would contribute to destroying the quality of life of fellow community members. Not if their work is harmful to the water, air, and ecosystems that sustain us. No job is worth what this pipeline and accompanying gas development will destroy. More

Citing Health Hazards, Citizens Demand End to MTR Permits
oday approximately 200 West Virginians rallied for healthy communities at the West Virginia Dept. of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) headquarters in Charleston. The People’s Foot, a coalition of West Virginia groups and individuals, held the “No More Mountaintop Removal Permits Day” to demand that the WVDEP stop issuing new permits for this coal extraction method. Mountaintop removal causes clouds of fine blasting dust, known to promote lung cancer and other diseases, to drift through communities. More

Exploding Bakken Crude: People Evacuated. Crude in River?
West Virginia’s over-reliance on dirty, dangerous fossil fuels guarantees more disasters, more toxic pollution of our precious, vital water resources, increases to on-going threats to public health and safety, and threatens the very future of planet Earth due to climate disruption. This is beyond common sense when clean, renewable solar and wind energy are off-the-shelf technology becoming increasingly more competitive with coal, gas and oil with the added benefits of thousands of new jobs along with greater safety for the public. Winds of Change, March 2014
Don’t drink the water. Don’t shower. Don’t cook with it or wash your clothes. There’s half a century gone. Gone most of us who went to Elk Grade School, gone, too. Gone the white frame homes, the small brick duplexes, the school we marched to for our polio shots. Gone the quick-tongued streams, gone the valleys, filled with mountaintop, gone from the fog-draped skyscape. It’s licorice scented air, not sun-dried cotton sheets, licorice wafting from the tap. No matter how it is mined, the coal we burn for electricity is a driving force of global climate disruption. However, mountaintop-removal-mined coal disrupts and destroys entire communities and ecosystems even before it is burned. More

The Future We Don’t Want
Below is a statement from the Non-govermental Organizations (NGOs) attending the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development.  Much frustration exists among ordinary people here over the fact that that 20 nations are deciding the fate of 195. Many have been saying that the current document is taking steps backwards from the agreement reach in Rio […] More

Let’s Talk Energy Ethics
Topping my list of things to be thankful for these days is the National Council of Churches’ (NCC) strong support for ending the ravages of mountaintop removal (MTR) coal mining. The National Council of Churches, with an office located in DC, recently hosted an event called “Ecumenical Advocacy Days.” Of the more than 800 participants […] More
