Like many small communities in southern West Virginia, Maria's homeplace is increasingly surrounded by mountaintop removal / valley fill coal mining.

Dust coming off the mine sites can contain silica from blasted sandstone, coal dust, chemicals from the blasting agents used and diesel equipment smoke.
