Paul Epstein’s Blair Mountain

Blair Mountain
Words and Music by Paul Epstein, founder of AWARE

Tell me what is a mountain

When it’s blasted flat?

What is a valley when it’s been filled?

What is a stream when it’s covered with rock?

A forest where the trees have been killed?

In West Virginia is a mountain

Where miners took a stand

Fighting for the right to unionize

Now the unions are gone and the hungry machines

Want Blair Mountain to give up its prize

Who’s going to stand up and save our mountains?

Who’s going to stand for the streams?

Who’s going to stand for the lives of the people

Against the power of the Machine?

In West Virginia once were mountains, forests and streams,

Mountaineers who thought they were free,

But they sold their souls to the company store

To keep the lights on in Washington D.C.

Who’s going to stand up and save our mountains?

Who’s going to stand for the streams?

Who’s going to stand for the lives of the people

Against the power of the Machine?
