More than 150 people from across the country, including OVEC members and staff, are in Washington D.C. right now for the 7th Annual End Mountaintop Removal Week in Washington. In about 150 meetings with Congresspeople and officials from various agencies they are delivering this message: Stop mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia.
Recent, peer-reviewed studies have shown devastating health impacts: citizens near mountaintop removal are 50% more likely to die of cancer and 42% more likely to be born with birth defects compared with other people in Appalachia.
There’s going to be a rally in D.C. on Wednesday, June 6 from 11 a.m. to noon at Upper Senate Park , on the corner of New Jersey and Constitution Ave.
Can’t come to the rally? You can also support our mountain heroes by calling on your Congressperson to support the Clean Water Protection Act:
1. Set up an in-district meeting with your local Congressional office or just drop by. Setting up a meeting is simple! Here’s how.
2. Take just a minute and join our National Call-In Day.
Appalachians are sick and tired of being sick and tired and have planned many actions against mountaintop removal for the coming year. Follow the action at Appalachia Rising.
