Horrifyingly, it’s another week of climate chaos right here in the USA, and climate change impacts around the world continue to escalate. Political inaction on the matter is really scary, at best. Criminal, ecocidal, insane are other words that come to mind. Let Senator Machin know that you are among many of his constituents who, like the majority of Americans, want governmental measures that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There’s an outdoor, mask-required Halloween Rally for Climate Action in Charleston this Saturday, October 30 and there’s a Prayer for Senator Machin on All Saints Day, November 1. Details below. Manchin must know that in terms of goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, we are nowhere near where science says we should be. That’s according to Patricia Espinosa, the chief of the U.N. climate office. She says, “Overshooting the temperature goals will lead to a destabilized world and endless suffering, especially among those who have contributed the least to the GHG emissions in the atmosphere.” We are hearing reports that Machin says West Virginians aren’t worried about the climate crisis. Please take action to show him otherwise. |

October 30: Halloween Climate Rally There’s nothing scarier than climate change and its debilitating impacts. From devastating floods and deadly heat waves to the health and economic costs of inaction, climate change is deeply affecting our West Virginia communities. Come out this Saturday, October 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., for the Halloween Rally for Climate Action, in front of the Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse Building, 300 Virginia St. E., in downtown Charleston, WV. The goal is to let Senator Joe Manchin hear a wide variety of West Virginian voices, urging him to protect our land and people by standing with clean energy. There will be music, speakers, a climate action opportunity, a photo booth to send a climate message and more, including a virtual address to the rally from Dr. Michael E. Mann, one of the world’s leading climate scientists. NOTE: This is a mask-wearing outdoor event. Please wear masks if you come. You’re welcome to wear Halloween ones, too! If you aren’t vaccinated, please get with your local Health Department, physician, or local healthcare provider. Your health matters. PARKING: There are lots of parking spaces in the nearby Town Center Mall parking garage and on local streets. |

November 1, All Saints Day: WVIPL Prayer for Manchin This day of prayer will be announced in conjunction with the Halloween Rally for Climate Action on Saturday, October 30, from 1 p.m.- 2:30 p.m., at 300 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV, sponsored by the West Virginia Climate Alliance. Copies of the prayer will be available at the event. You can also find the prayer and suggested action steps here. Senator Joe Manchin and others in powerful, elected positions have been given the public trust to act for the common good. He and they therefore have a unique and special burden for moral and political leadership on decisions that affect all of us. Join WVIPL in prayer to move Manchin. |
