Counter Coal Delegation in DC Today: Call EPA Now
As you may know, West Virginia Democratic Party leaders have organized a 17-person delegation that is in Washington, D.C., today, August 1. They aim to tell the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to “prevent new restrictions on coal-fired electric power plants.”

Please take a few minutes today to call the EPA to let the agency know this WV delegation does not represent you.  Call EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy at 202-564-4700. Please place your call between 9 and 5 today, and please encourage your friends and family to do the same.  You can find links to contact Secretary McCarthy on Facebook and Twitter here.

Below are two sample scripts that you can use to help make your call.

Short: Hello, my name is _______________ and I am calling from ____________.

I’m calling to urge the Environmental Protection Agency to continue to focus on protecting the water, air and health of residents of Appalachian communities. Coal companies don’t mind putting us at risk. EPA is responsible for protecting our lives. EPA has helped us and we expect the agency to continue to do so. Thank you, EPA.

More detail: Hello, my name is _______________ and I am calling from ____________ to urge the Environmental Protection Agency to continue to focus on protecting the health of residents of Appalachia and all Americans.

Right now, there’s a delegation of West Virginia politicians and business interests visiting EPA saying they don’t want any new restrictions on coal-fired electric power plants.

I want EPA to know these coal-industry apologists do not represent me and my family. I applaud the EPA’s efforts to protect our future by protecting human health and the environment. Without clean air, clean water and healthy humans, we have little hope for sustainable economic development.

EPA did the right thing in vetoing the Spruce No. 1 mountaintop removal mine permit. Massive mountaintop removal mines are making us sick and poisoning our land and water. I urge EPA to stand strong in its work to protect human health and the environment we depend on. Thank you, EPA.

(Info on EPA veto and Spruce No. 1 Mine here.)

If you haven't already, be sure to e-mail this welcome note to Secretary McCarthy.

More About The Great Ohio River Relay
Plans are coming along nicely for The Great Ohio River Relay. We hope you will join in this historic relay, with rallies along the way, all focusing attention on the increasing threat of pollution — primarily from unconventional gas well drilling byproducts —  to the Ohio River and its tributaries.

Anti-fracking activists, and allied groups, along the Ohio River and in the Ohio River Basin are invited to participate in this relay, by sponsoring a portion of the route and/or by committing people who will agree to either kayak, walk, run, or bicycle the baton along the route. Sponsoring groups can hold rallies, bringing awareness and publicity to the cause of defending and keeping our water sources clean. When the baton comes through the Huntington area, we will have a rally on, or near the riverfront, so stay tuned for details about that.

Anyone who is interested in transporting the baton needs to do communicate their preferred route to relay organizers and do a "dry run" of that route by August 10. Check this website for details.

To learn more or get involved contact Robin Mahonen at 304-639-5538 or contact Robin Blakeman at or 304-522-0246.

Award Winners at the Picnic
Thanks to the 80-some folks (some of them pictured below) who came out to the OVEC picnic last Friday evening. That was big fun!

Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of OVEC’s work. Without so many dedicated volunteers who share their time and talents, we could never boast so many victories since our beginnings in 1987. Our awards are a small way for us to publically thank a handful of you for the work you do on behalf of OVEC or other groups. Know that every volunteer is dear to us, and all deserve recognition. But at Friday's picnic, we were so pleased to honor our 2012-2013 award winners, for their work with OVEC or allied groups:

Outstanding Ally: Debbie Jarrell, co-director of Coal River Mountain Watch

Outstanding Regional Networker:  Sylvia Arthur

Outstanding Volunteers:  Judy and Russ Judy Whitley

Outstanding Citizen Lobbyist: Becky Park

Outstanding Sustainable Community Initiative:  The Wild Ramp

Laura Forman Passion for Justice Award: Wilma and Terry Steele

Congratulations folks!

Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the picnic and to OVEC member Doug Woods and the WV Humanities Council for Ostenaco's visit.

Tell EPA: What Coal's Politicians Say is Not Okay!

The delegation now visiting D.C. will fail to mention the health impacts of mountaintop removal (below) and coal-fired power plants (above). Coal-bought politicians and the WV Chamber of Commerce don't speak for us. Make sure EPA knows this.
Call EPA today: 202-564-4700.
