Keep Up The Fight To Stop Mountaintop Removal

Late last week, siding with the coal industry, a federal court overturned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's veto of one of the worst mountaintop removal mines permits ever issued in U.S. history, the Spruce No. 1 Mine in Logan County, West Virginia.

This ruling is heartbreaking, but it doesnt have to mean defeat - as long as the Obama Administration keeps standing behind EPA and the Clean Water Act. That's why the Obama Administration needs to hear from you now.

The EPA was right to veto the permit, because the proposed Spruce mine poses threats far too grave to the waters that it will destroy and to the people living near the mine, many of whom have already suffered from the water, air and health impacts of nearby mountaintop removal already under operation.

More than 50,000 people across the country sent in comments backing the EPA's veto.

When we heard the news of the court's ruling on the Spruce mine, we vowed to continue fighting this abominable mining practice until we end it and bring protections, at long last, to all the people of Appalachia.

We do this work because what mountaintop removal does is wrong - destroying mountains, poisoning water and driving Appalachian communities to extinction is wrong. Allowing people to have clean water and a safe environment is right.

We believe the EPA has a very strong case to appeal the federal court's ruling. We are asking for your help in keeping up the fight for what is right. Will you take a moment to urge the Obama administration to move forward in its efforts to address the extreme destruction of mountaintop removal coal mining?

Please take action now and urge the Obama administration to stand strong amid coal industry attacks and take even more action to protect the waters and people of Appalachia.
