Come up to Kayford Mountain this Weekend

Al Franken on Mountaintop Removal and Dan Radmacher

Crum and DEP

FUN, PLUS MTR ON KAYFORD THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Larry Gibson invites you to Kayford Mountain this Saturday and/or Sunday (Aug. 30 and 31, beginning at 1 p.m. each day) for the 14th annual Stanley Family Heirs Foundation Labor Day Weekend Celebration. Bring a covered dish for folks to share. Food and drink will also be available for purchase.

Music includes Stan McDaniels (country singer) and John Blizzard. From the picnic shelter and stage area of the park you can walk up to the Stanley Cemetery where you can see the mountaintop removal operations surrounding Kayford. To get to Kayford Mountain: From Charleston take I-64 East. Pass the first toll gate and take the first exit, #79 (Sharon-Cabin Creek). Go right at the bottom of the ramp and then make an immediate left onto Cabin Creek Road. Go 7-1/2 miles to the "Y" at Leewood and take the right fork. Go 3-1/2 to 4 more miles and come to blacktop and dirt. At the left-hand corner take the one-lane bridge across the creek. Stay on this road for 1-1/2 to 2 miles and go right up the hill. Follow the guard rails to the end where you will come to a large white rock. Bear right for 1/10 mile to Stanley Heirs Park. Larry Gibson's phone number is (304) 542-1134.

AL FRANKEN ON MTR

In his new book, "Lies, and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right," Al Franken mentions mountaintop removal. As an alert Action Alert! reader and student activist notes, the MTR blurb is "about a page and a half long (p. 329-330). No jokes or good lines to steal and it's mainly stuff we already hear about and know, but it's still cool that it's in a book." As a bonus, the Charleston Gazette's former editorial page editor, Dan Radmacher is also mentioned in the book.

Check out this New York Times article on the book and Fox News' lawsuit against it, "In Courtroom, Laughter at Fox and a Victory for Al Franken."
